how we met

November 5th, 2021 | New Haven, CT

Stephanie was six weeks away from finishing Physician Assistant school and moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, and she was counting down every day until then. On that particular Friday night, she and her friends didn’t have any plans, but they caught a last minute invite from their friend Jaime to join her at her boyfriend Connor’s birthday party at the arcade bar downtown.

Dave had returned that morning from a trip to Maine with friends from medical school. He was heading into his last semester and planning to start residency in San Diego, California the following summer. His lifelong friend, Connor, was having a birthday party that night, and despite his fatigue from the long week of hiking and traveling, he and a few friends decided to attend.

“Hey Steph, do you want to meet Connor’s friend Dave? He’s single!”

The Next Six Weeks

After a night of arcade games interspersed with get-to-know-you drinks, followed by a casual “I’ll be around for the next six weeks if you want to hang out,” the two were inseparable. They spent every day together hiking, studying, and exploring Dave’s hometown of Guilford, Connecticut. After four weeks, Steph decided to delay her move to Utah until the end of February, suddenly not so eager to leave.

Dave met Steph’s parents at her PA school graduation, and they all hit it off. Later that week, a few days before her brother’s wedding in their hometown of Winter Park, Florida, her dad sent a legendary text to the family group chat: “Daniel and Mai Hanh have an extra seat at the wedding…Dave?” Dave booked a flight that night.

December 21st, 2021 | Gatorland

Walking among thousands of alligators and the artificial swamplands of central Florida’s most iconic tourist destination, the couple reminisced on the wedding weekend and talked about their futures. After six weeks of dating, Dave met Steph’s entire extended family, all of her family friends, and the seemingly endless line of her mom’s friends who introduced themselves one by one and each turned to Steph silently mouthing the words “he’s cute!” During these encounters, he listened to her confidently repeat her plans of moving to Utah at the end of February, despite conversations they had previously about her moving to San Diego instead (in Steph’s defense, she didn’t think he was serious). Well he was serious, so over 99 cent ice cream cones while watching adult men wrestle with alligators, they decided to give Steph’s moving to San Diego with Dave some real consideration.

2022-2024

The Gatorland conversation eventually led to Steph turning down a job offer at the University of Utah, canceling her pending lease on a Salt Lake City apartment, and turning her job hunt toward Southern California. They moved to San Diego that summer, joined the local CrossFit gym, and started their careers together.
